That One Room Is Lying to You (And It's Time to Call It Out)

You know the room I'm talking about.
The one you casually close the door on when company comes over. The one that started as "just temporary" storage and is now basically a full-time job to look at.
The garage. The spare bedroom. The dining room that hasn't hosted an actual dinner in... months.
HERE'S THE THING: That room isn't a storage unit. It's stolen square footage. And reclaiming it? Is one of the most satisfying things you will ever do for yourself.
Step 1: Name It
Which room is it? Say it out loud. (No judgment. 47% of Americans literally cannot park in their own garage because of clutter. You are not alone.)
Naming the problem is the first step to fixing it. So pick your room and commit.
Step 2: Get Clear on What You Actually Want
Before you touch a single thing, ask yourself: What do I WANT this space to be?
A guest room? A home gym? A garage where your car actually lives?
Write it down. That vision is going to carry you through the "why do I own 4 broken blenders" moments.
Step 3: Sort Like You Mean It
Everything in that room gets sorted into four piles:
Keep: you use it, you love it, it stays
Donate: good condition, just not yours anymore
Recycle: paper, cardboard, you know the drill
Trash: broken, done, bye
No "maybe" pile this time. Maybe is where clutter is born.
Step 4: Create Zones
Once you know what's staying, give everything a HOME.
Garage? Zone it out. Gardening stuff here, sports gear there, holiday decorations in their own designated corner.
When everything has a place, putting things away takes 30 seconds instead of 30 minutes of decision-making.
Step 5: Invest in the Right Storage
Only once you've gone through the purge and designated a space, then you can think about additional storage.
Shelving units. Labeled bins. Stackable boxes. A little investment here and measurments truly pay off BIG in time, sanity, and actually being able to find things.
If it doesn't have a home, it becomes clutter. Full stop.
Step 6: Protect the Progress
This is where most people drop the ball but it doesn't have to be you.
Do a quick weekly check-in. Are things making it back to their designated spots? Is the "drop zone" creeping back? Catch it early and it stays easy. If you notice that the system you tried isn't working for your everyday, try something else that more easily aligns with your day-to-day. Not every organizing tip or trick works for everyone. It's not a one size fits all. It's what works for you. In your home. In your life.
A Few Tricks To Try
Start small. One shelf. One corner. One drawer. Small wins build momentum FAST.
Set a timer. Fifteen minutes a day is genuinely enough to make a dent. You don't need a whole Saturday, you need consistency.
The Basket Method. Grab a laundry basket, walk through the house, fill it with anything out of place. Put things away, toss the trash, drop the donations in a bag by the door. Daily. Watch the magic happen.
Keep a donation bin going. As things come out of rotation, they go straight in the bin. Next errand day, drop it off. Done.
And If You're Overwhelmed? Ask for Help.
There is zero shame in calling in backup. A professional organizer can get you through clutter faster than you'd believe, and make the whole process way less miserable.
That's literally what I'm here for.
So which room is it for you? Name it, claim it, and let's take it BACK. 🙌
