Put Down the Storage Unit Key (You Don't Need It)

Let me say something that might make some people uncomfortable: as a professional organizer, I'm here to tell you to skip the storage unit.

I know, I know. You're already drafting your "but JJ..." in your head.

Hold that thought...

Here's the thing.

Every single item you're considering putting into storage is something you've already decided you're not going to use.

Think about that for a second.

You're about to pay monthly rent on a box full of things you don't want in your home.

That's not organizing.

That's just moving the problem down the road and paying for the privilege.

The Storage Unit Lie We Tell Ourselves

It starts innocently.

"I'll just store it for now."

But now turns into six months.

Six months turns into two years.

Two years turns into a unit full of stuff you completely forgot about and a monthly bill you've just accepted as part of life.

The stuff doesn't get used.

It doesn't get donated.

It just sits there, in the dark, costing you money and mental energy every time you think about it.

If you haven't used something in the past year, that item is telling you something.

Listen to it!

Okay, Fine there are Exceptions

Before you close this tab, yes, there are legitimate reasons to use storage.

A few, actually.

The first is a life transition.

Are you moving between homes, going through a divorce, or in the middle of a major renovation? These are all moments where temporary storage makes total sense.

The key word there is temporary.

You have a plan, a timeline, and a clear reason. (And honestly? This is the perfect time to bring in a professional organizer to help you decide what actually comes back into the new space and what's let go for good.)

The second exception is for equipment-heavy work.

If your job requires gear, tools, or supplies that simply don't fit in your home, that's a real storage need.

Same goes for my future famous clients who need a climate-controlled space for their red carpet looks. You wore the gown once to the Grammys, I get it. ;)

For these situations, an organizer can actually help you set up a proper inventory system so you know exactly what you have and where it is.

But here's the honest truth: most people don't fall into either of those categories.

What a Storage Unit Really Costs You

A standard 5x10 unit in Phoenix runs about $66/month, and a 10x20, enough to hold a three-bedroom home's worth of stuff, averages $182/month.

That's up to $2,184 a year.

Over five years, you've spent nearly $11,000 storing things you never went back for.

That's a vacation.

A home refresh.

Money that could have actually added to your life instead of funding a unit full of things you were avoiding. Storage Cafe

The clutter doesn't disappear when it goes into storage. It just becomes expensive clutter.

So What Do You Do Instead?

You make decisions. That's it. That's the whole thing.

And if making decisions about your stuff feels overwhelming, paralyzing, or just too much... that's exactly what I'm here for!

Together we go through what you have, figure out what actually serves your life right now, and let go of the rest in a way that feels good.

No guilt, no pressure, just clarity.

Your home should feel like a place you want to be. Not an overflow lot for things you're not ready to deal with.

Ready to skip the storage unit and actually deal with the stuff? Let's talk. Book a free consultation and let's figure out what's really going on in those piles.
